What are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes that provide individuals with the skills needed to succeed in their role and develop their career within a business. This means apprentices can put their skills into practice daily at work, while also gaining a nationally recognised apprenticeship and being paid.

Leisure Apprentice

Tees Active are recruiting a leisure team apprentice in June 2022 to undertake a new and exciting multi skilled apprenticeship standard which will develop a number of skills, knowledge and behaviours across several departments within our leisure facilities. Apprentices will gain certificates in Pool Lifeguarding, Fitness or Gym Instruction, First Aid and Swimming Teaching. Apply today!

(Monday to Sunday working a shift pattern including earlies and lates)



At Tees Active, we have been supporting young people to take their first steps into the exciting world of leisure and health and fitness.

A high number of our apprentices go on to secure employment with us once their apprenticeship has finished, which highlights our commitment to nurturing talented young people at the beginning of their journey.

We wish to recruit an apprentice in June 2022 to undertake this new and exciting multi skilled standard which will develop a number of skills, knowledge, and behaviours across several departments within our leisure facility, with a focus on excellent customer service.

The apprenticeship will support developing confidence and knowledge in the operations of the leisure facility enabling you to:


  • provide client consultations in health and fitness, gym instruction and leading group activities
  • perform duties as part of a team of Lifeguards monitoring the pool area and providing trained assistance to users in difficulty, including when necessary administering first aid
  • perform duties as a Swimming Teacher
  • assist the team with operational duties to maintain the leisure facility.


During programme you will undertake technical certificates in:

  • IQL Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding
  • Level 2 Certificate in Fitness or Gym Instruction
  • Level 3 certificate in First Aid
  • Swim England Level 2 in Teaching Swimming



You must be enthusiastic about wanting to work within leisure, be able meet the basic fitness criteria to fulfil the demands of undertaking the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, including a swim test and regular mandatory lifeguard training. You will also be committed to inspiring others to be more physically active. No prior qualifications or experience are required, but a willingness to learn, develop and challenge yourself is essential.


You will:

  • Be able to swim and dive which is part of the course pre-requisite
  • Possess a passion for physical activity and healthy lifestyles
  • Have good communication skills
  • Be organised and able to work effectively in teams and as an individual
  • Always maintain a professional approach to work
  • Be able to relate well to, motivate, and encourage others being conscious of being always a positive role model
  • Have an enthusiastic attitude to life and work
  • Have the ability to make learning and work fun



You must be committed to completing your apprenticeship.



This programme may lead to possible progression into full and part time leisure or health and fitness roles, further qualifications, higher level apprenticeships and employment within the leisure sector.

The apprenticeship also has facilitated learning sessions every 4-6 weeks. Your dedicated tutor will support you through the qualification and help you put your learning into practice at work.

You will also be supported by experienced mentors within your workplace, who will be there to help you plan and deliver engaging and inclusive sessions. This member of staff will also help you to reflect and develop on your Swimming coaching, health and fitness and lifeguarding practice as you progress through the programme.

Apprenticeship Opportunities offered by Tees Active


The Leisure Team Member is responsible for a range of operational duties such as assisting with the opening and closing of the facility, undertaking routine maintenance of equipment and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the leisure environment.

On completion of this standard apprentices will be competent in five key areas including; leisure and fitness operations, lifeguard duties, swimming teaching duties, gym instruction and leading group activities.


The Customer Service apprenticeship develops the expertise required by customer-facing specialists dealing with a range of leisure clients. The programme builds on existing knowledge to develop learners into experts in customer service, understanding the active leisure customer journey in detail.


The Business Administration Apprenticeship provides the opportunity for administrators in the fitness sector to grow and develop their skills towards management capabilities. Learners will understand how to troubleshoot and improve administrative processes, build strong working relationships with key clients, and develop person and professional skills to thrive in a busy environment.
