Participants may work towards personal performance awards such as Paddle Start, Paddle Discover and Paddle Explore, building a strong foundation in:

- Progressive coaching on flat and moving water
- Introduction to white water environments (where appropriate)
- Equipment familiarisation and safe use

Pre-course preparation for qualifications
Before formal Paddle UK training and assessment, participants will receive:
- Targeted preparation aligned to Paddlesport Instructor requirements
- Skills benchmarking and individual feedback
- Opportunities to practice leadership, group management and session delivery
This staged approach ensures participants begin qualifications with the skills, confidence and experience needed to succeed, while developing safely within a supportive, real-world environment.
What the Programme Includes
A structured development package that may include:
- 1-year Paddle UK membership
Providing access to waterways licences, insurance, resources and development pathways
- Paddlesport Instructor qualification (training & assessment)
An entry-level instructor award enabling delivery of safe, engaging beginner sessions across multiple craft types
- Stadium Raft Guide training and assessment
Preparing participants to guide safe, enjoyable rafting experiences on artificial white water courses such as TBIWWC
- Additional development opportunities
- Safety and rescue training (where required)
- Shadowing experienced instructors and raft guides
- Ongoing professional development within Tees Active

The Paddlesport Instructor qualification is recognised as a key entry point into the paddlesport industry, enabling delivery of safe and engaging introductory sessions.
The Stadium Raft Guide award supports the safe delivery of rafting activities on artificial white water courses.
Progression Opportunities
Following successful completion, participants may progress into:
- Casual or permanent watersports roles within Tees Active
- Coaching and leadership qualifications
- Specialist pathways including white water kayaking, rafting leadership or outdoor instruction
Additional Opportunities (Age Dependant)
Depending on age, experience and suitability, participants may also be trained to support or deliver additional activities, including:
- Air Trail including supervision, safety and customer engagement
Course Fees
£150 (discount of £450 applied). Subject to being selected via a recruitment process to join the ‘Kickstart programme’ and gaining employment either on a casual or contracted basis.
