To Infinity Bridge and Beyond
Twelve young people from HYPE (Hardwick Young Persons Enterprise), definitely had an Adventures Away from Home as they visited Tees Barrage International White-Water Centre. Funded through the Department for Culture Media and Sport and managed by UK Youth the Adventures Away from Home fund has enabled Tees Active to provide 118 young people aged between 11 and 18 the opportunity to sample a host of outdoor activities and discover that on their doorstep they have the great environmental asset which is the River Tees.
The excited young people’s day started with them improving their bushcraft skills as they learned to make waterproof shelters, then they tested their head for heights as they tackled the Air Trail High ropes course which enabled them to take in some of the magnificent views of the River Tees and surrounding area from the top of the structure.
After a hearty lunch they started the afternoon with a river trip in bell boats, with conditions being perfect they had the unique opportunity to jump into the River Tees and stand on one of the iconic Infinity Bridges supports. A quick paddle back to the Barrage and the happy youngsters were introduced to stand up paddleboarding with Amy from the group showing her exceptional core strength and balance as she manged to perform a handstand on her paddle board.
Danielle Rollinson, Lead Youth Worker for HYPE said “The Adventures Away from Home day at Tees Barrage has had a positive impact on our young people by improving their confidence, teamwork and listening skills. Thank You Tees Active and UK Youth,”
A parent of one of the participants added “What a fantastic experience which has given my daughter confidence to overcome her fears, gain social skills around staff and friends. I am grateful for her having this experience and keeping her out of trouble.”
Allan McDermott, Tees Actives Community Engagement Manager said “ The Adventures Away from Funding which is managed by UK Youth will enable a number of varied groups who engage with young people aged between 11-18 to participate in activities in an environment which potentially they would not have had the opportunity to experience previously. HYPE were the first of 9 different groups who will access this experience throughout March. To watch the young people from HYPE grow in confidence throughout the day has been fantastic to witness and hopefully some of the physical, emotional and social skills they can take away with them and will help them in later life.”
