The charitable leisure trust Tees Active is pleased to launch and deliver the Active Wellness Programme, funded by the Northern Cancer Alliance. The free programme is designed to specifically support people with lived experience of cancer through gentle, inclusive physical activity and opportunities to connect with others in a supportive environment.
The programme recognises the important role that movement, confidence-building and social connection can play in wellbeing, particularly for those who may be rebuilding strength or routines following diagnosis, treatment, or recovery.
Running across two of Tees Active’s venues; Thornaby Pavilion and Tees Barrage, the programme offers a range of accessible activities led by experienced staff that include chair based yoga, supervised gym sessions and bellboating, with all sessions completely free to attend.
Developed in consultation with Macmillan Cancer Support, the sessions are welcoming, adaptable and suitable for a range of abilities, with a focus on enjoyment and confidence rather than performance. Participants can take part at their own pace while improving mobility, strength and overall wellbeing, and benefiting from the social connection of being active alongside others with shared experiences.
Nadine Corner, Tees Active’s Health and Wellbeing Manager, said: “Thanks to funding from the Northern Cancer Alliance, we are really excited to be able to deliver the Active Wellness Programme and offer a range of physical activities to support people with lived experience of cancer. The programme aims to improve both physical and mental wellbeing, while also providing valuable insight that will help us develop and strengthen the service over the next 12 months and beyond, supporting recovery and improving quality of life.”
Chair-Based Yoga
Taking place every Monday at Thornaby Pavilion, from 12:45pm to 1:45pm, these sessions begin on Monday 11 May. Chair-based yoga offers gentle movement, stretching and relaxation, making it an ideal introduction to physical activity or a supportive option for those looking for low-impact exercise.
Supervised Gym Sessions
Starting on Thursday 4 June, supervised gym sessions will run every Thursday at Thornaby Pavilion from 1pm to 2pm. These sessions provide participants with guided support in a gym environment, helping to build confidence, improve fitness and develop safe, sustainable exercise habits.
Bellboating at Tees Barrage
Every Friday throughout June, participants are invited to take part in Belboating at Tees Barrage, from 1pm to 3pm. All equipment will be provided for this sociable, team-based water activity which offers a unique and enjoyable way to be active outdoors while encouraging teamwork and connection.
