Tigers Triumph on the Thames
Tees Tigers Canoeing Club started the 2013 slalom season in style as their juniors showed the rest of the field how it should be done by winning three of the four K1 category races.
The first Division 1 event of the season was held at Shepperton on the River Thames and it was definitely worth the long trip down from Teesside as Bethan Kelly aged 15 from Hartlepool topped the podium in the first race narrowly beating her Welsh rival Cara Lee.
Not to be outdone fellow Tigers and Tees Active Sports Academy members Calum Cresser and Brandon Watson shone in the men’s race with 16 year old Calum taking top spot and 17 year old Brandon taking fourth place with a field that consisted of 49 paddlers. On day 2 of the meet the results were reversed, with Stockton teenager Brandon taking top spot and Calum coming in a creditable fourth. All the Tigers will be in action over the Easter holidays where they hope to take their good form into the races at Grandtulley in Scotland.
The Tigers who are based at Tees Barrage International White Water Centre and coached by Darren Cresser have been taking advantage of the refurbished course at the barrage and Darren said” The results at the weekend is reward for all the hard work our paddlers have been putting in over the winter both on the water and in the gym. We have a young and talented squad in the club and hopefully we can prove ourselves throughout the season.” (To the left: Callum Cresser)
