GB Selection for Zac
Tees Tiger and Tees Active Sports Academy member Zac Allin has started off his canoe slalom season with fantastic success to gain selection to the Junior GB World and European Championship Slalom Team for 2013.
Selection was down to a series of three exciting premier level slalom races held on the Tryweryn in Bala, North Wales, the Tay in Grandtully in Scotland, and the Holme Pierrepoint National White Water Course in Nottingham.
These races included the best adult and junior paddlers in the country with only the top three under 18 juniors in each category of K1, C1 and C2 making it. After first runs at the Tryweryn on 9 March Zac was fourth junior, but a clean and fast second run four seconds faster led him to finish 13th in the Premier race and second junior, putting him in a good position for the race in Scotland.
At Grandtully on Easter weekend, water levels were unusually low, making the course narrower and rockier. However, another clean and faster second run secured his position as 11th premier and second junior. The final race in Nottingham was on 13th April, with slalom gates set in strategic places to use the whole variety of white water features. Zac put in a solid and smooth first run, picking up penalties on his second run, but enough to give him 18th in premier division and third junior, consolidating his position on the team.
This was the first year he was eligible to try out for Under 18 GB selection. He will go forward to compete in the Junior Worlds in Liptovsky, Slovakia and the Junior Europeans in Bourg St Maurice, France, in July.
