Rachel on Right Track
Rachel Highfield a member of Gateshead Athletics Club and Tees Active Sports Academy has started her 2013 athletics season in style as this 17 year old from Thornaby has already claimed the indoor North Eastern 60m title and returned with 2 silver medals from the indoor Northern Championships in the 60m and the 200m.
Her success at the Northern Championships has meant she was selected as part of a North of England team to compete at the Malta International meet. The North of England team which consisted of 19 athletes trained and competed in Malta for 4 days against athletes from all over Europe.
17 year old Rachel from Thornaby was competing against 23 year old Diane Borg who competed at the 2012 Olympics and is the current Maltese record holder for the 100 and 200m.In windy conditions Rachel managed to beat the Olympian in both the 100 and 200m.
Rachel said “The opportunity to compete against athletes from other countries was a tremendous experience and the chance to train and compete in warm weather conditions was great. Unfortunately on race day the windy conditions did not make fast times possible but it was great to win.”
Rachel is back in Thornaby training hard for the Loughborough International Meet next weekend where she will be hoping to post some more fast times against some top class female sprinters.
