Baku to host inaugural European Olympics
Baku, capital city of Azerbaijan, has been chosen to host the inaugural European Olympic Games to be held in 2015.
An overwhelming majority of the European Olympics Committee’s (EOC) 49 nations supported the Azerbaijan bid, voted for in a secret ballot at the committee’s 41st General Assembly in Rome, on 8 December.
The city has previously bid unsuccessfully for the 2016 and 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, failing to make the shortlist on both occasions.
Exact dates for the event have not been decided but it will take place in late spring or early summer and will include 15 sports on the programme.
EOC president Patrick Hickey said Baku will be “a test” but it’s hoped the event can continue in the long term.
