Paddlers Power into National Squad
Two Teesside kayakers are celebrating after being selected for the England National Talent Squad. Daisy Cooil and Ben Teasdale who are both members of Tees Active Sports Academy have been selected as part of an elite group of kayakers all under the age of 18 who have proved through their performances in the Premier League of British Canoeing that they have the potential and willingness to train and compete at the highest level of kayaking,
Ben who is 17 years of age is an apprentice roofer and has had a fantastic first season in the Premier league which has caught the eyes of the selectors. Aaron Cruickshank who coaches both Ben and Daisy said “Ben has a fantastic work ethic and takes on board everything he is told and then produces consistent performances at a very high level,”
Daisy Cooil,14 competes in the Premier division in both the K1 and C1 class was runner up at this Year Evening Gazette Sports Awards has had a meteoric rise through the divisions of kayaking and her selection is testament to her dedication.
This modest teenager said “ To be selected for the National Talent Squad is a tremendous honour and I know this will mean more hard work on the water for me and even more travelling for my parents as Ben and myself will have to regularly attend camps at Lee Valley and Nottingham.”
Ben and Daisy will be working hard through the winter months and will be attending their first 2 national squad camps in the first 2 weekends in December where they will be receiving intensive coaching from the national coaching team.
