CHILDREN IN STOCKTON-ON-TEES LEARN LIFE SAVING SKILLS
Children from Stockton-on-Tees are being given the chance to learn about the dangers posed by open water thanks to a vital life-saving scheme.
The youngsters are being taught water safety skills as part of Tees Actives School Swimming lessons at Splash, Thornaby Pool and Billingham Forum from Monday 1st – Friday 5th July. The campaign is part of Get Safe, an educational and water safety campaign run by the ASA (the national governing body for swimming) and one of a series of events in 2013.
The week aims to teach children about the dangers of open water, as well as highlighting that swimming is the only sport that can save your life.
Di Wilson, Aquatics Manager for Tees Active said “There will be an action-packed week of activities in the water with a host of fun and educational events, including learning how to help others in danger and recognizing when somebody is in trouble. On dry land there will also be a number of activities including how to perform CPR (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) and recognising the different flags that are displayed at beaches.
Specifically the campaign teaches children all the important things they need to know when visiting coastal and inland waters, from how they can spot the dangers themselves to how to act in an emergency.
ASA Chief Executive David Sparkes said: “The ability to recognise dangers and knowledge of water safety is just as important as being able to swim. Particularly important during the summer holidays, the ASA’s Get Safe campaign is all about raising awareness that swimming in open water such as lakes, rivers, canals and the sea is very different from the pool. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the water but in a safe and sensible way.”
With recent reports highlighting that more than a million children are leaving primary schools unable to swim 25 metres, Tees Active is keen to promote the Get Safe message to all of the children living in Stockton-on-Tees. All children should have the opportunity to Learn-to-Swim and in addition to the school swimming lessons our pools deliver a full range of swimming lessons for children and adults of all abilities.
In addition to the weekly lessons Splash are also running a series of intensive swimming lessons over the summer holidays. For more information on swimming lessons or any other aquatic activities please contact Tees Active venues or email email@example.com
