BILLINGHAM WELCOMES PRESTIGIOUS NORTH-EAST SPORTS AWARDS
SPORTSMEN and women from across the North-East will be wrapping up warm and getting ready to take to the ice at Billingham Forum next week.
The BBC’s annual North East Sports Awards are being held in Stockton Borough for the first time.
And that’s not the only first – this time the award ceremony is going to take place on ice!
On Wednesday 5 February the region’s most talented sportsmen and women will descend on the newly refurbished Billingham Forum to find out who has been crowned this year’s winners.
Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Ken Dixon, said: “Billingham Forum is a fantastic sporting facility and a perfect venue to welcome such a high calibre of sporting men and women.
“This is yet another great coup for Stockton Borough which is continuing to attract quality sporting events and has a vast range of local clubs, supported by venues such as Billingham Forum, which are developing talented sporting amateurs and professionals right across the area.
“I’m sure it will be an exciting and entertaining evening. I wish everyone involved the very best of luck.”
Managing Director of Tees Active, Steve Chaytor, said: “We’re thrilled that the BBC is bringing these prestigious awards to Teesside and in particular, Billingham Forum. What could be more fitting as the Winter Olympics are about to start than to host the event on ice. I’m sure it will be a memorable evening.”
Look North presenters Jeff Brown and Dawn Thewlis will host the ceremony, along with BBC Tees presenter, Alastair Brownlee.
The event will celebrate the sporting successes of the North-East with Middlesbrough Football Club, Newcastle Falcons, boxer Glenn McCrory and representatives from Durham County Cricket Club among the guest list.
It recognises contributions across all elements of sport – from coaches to volunteers to elite performers and teams. Categories include Sports Personality of the Year, Disabled Sports Personality of the Year, Team of the Year, Unsung Hero and more.
The prestigious event is organised by BBC North East, BBC Outreach, Sport England, Stockton Council and Tees Active Leisure.
