Walking is a great way to keep physically active and can be done alone, with family or friends or as part of an organised group.

For inspiration, we’ve provided some of our favourite walking routes across Teesside and some mapped routes that can be done straight from your front door in Stockton for you to try!

There are plenty of parks and nature reserves in Stockton-on-Tees for everyone to enjoy, here’s a list of ones we love for you to try! We have handpicked some walks below but lots more can be found by clicking here also. Get outdoors and see what our great region has to offer!

River Tees Stroll

A lovely walk along the River Tees starting from Tees Barrage International White Water Centre and crossing both Newport Bridge and Infinity Bridge. A picturesque area of the River Tees with wildlife and good views. Approx. 3 miles

Roseberry Topping

Rosberry Topping is a popular place to explore with its abundant wildlife and panoramic views from the summit across Teesside and surrounding areas. After reaching the summit complete your walk by walking through Newton Wood.

Wynyard Woodland Park

The former railway line now offers an excellent route for walking and cycling, with linking footpaths enabling visitors to wider parks including Thorpe Wood Local Nature Reserve, Tilery and Brierley Woods and the splendid Pickard Meadows.

Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park

This highly attractive park comprises large areas of woodland, colourful meadows, streams, wetlands and areas of open water. The main lake offers a pleasant loop to walk around. A large selection of wildlife can be seen including a range of birds and small mammals.

Ropner Park

Fully restored to its Victorian splendour, Ropner Park is a real delight at any time of year. You can stroll by the lakeside or along tree-lined avenues and admire the beautiful floral displays. There’s a fabulous play area, tennis courts, bowls club and large grassed areas for games and picnics. The splendid pavilion houses a café and toilets.

Preston Park Museum & Grounds

Preston Park is a 100-acre public park located next to the River Tees in Stockton-on-Tees. This former Georgian gentleman’s residence was built in 1825! Whether you’d like to take a stroll down their replica Victorian Street or in the Quarry Wood nature reserve, fancy a wander around the Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden, or play in their Adventure Play Area – there’s something for everyone!

RSPB Saltholme

This great walk will bring you closer to the oodles of wildlife that calls this place home! RSPB Saltholme is an amazing wildlife experience in Tees Valley. Explore the state-of-the-art visitor centre with panoramic views of this huge wetland wildlife reserve before heading out into it. There’s a brilliant café, play area and a great shop too!

Guisborough Woods & Highcliff Nab

Get away from it all with a forest ramble that also takes in stunning views over the Tees Valley. This 6.5 mile walk offers peace and quiet in gorgeous surroundings. If you fancy something shorter just stick to Guisborough Woods, this beautiful forest has a number of walks varying in length, cycle tracks and adventure for the kids with beautiful wooden sculptures throughout.

Hardwick Dene

Hardwick Dene is a secret valley, a piece of quiet countryside that has been saved from development. Old meadows, hedgerows, woodland and two streams form an oasis for wildlife where, despite its proximity, urban Stockton is quickly forgotten. Making Hardwick Dene a great walk for the whole family!

Newham Grange Park

Set in a rolling landscape, Newham Grange Park offers something for everyone, with woodlands, streams and ponds, large grassed areas, all interspersed with many fine, mature trees. There is a play area with artist-designed picnic tables nearby.

Billingham Beck Valley Country Park

With its wildflower meadows, reed beds, ponds, marsh and woodland, Billingham Beck Valley is a great place to explore – whatever the time of year. There’s plenty of footpaths running through the park, criss-crossing Billingham Beck and extending into the wider countryside.

Tees Heritage Park

The Tees Heritage Park covers the beautiful stretch of countryside along the banks of the River Tees between Stockton and Yarm. The area is served by a fantastic network of paths, including the Teesdale Way, Thornaby Trail and some great cycleways running between Preston Park, Ingleby Barwick and Thornaby.

Stockton is a great place to walk whether it’s in the town or in the countryside, there’s plenty to choose from. With help from our partners at Stockton Borough Council, we have provided a number of walking guides that not only suggest some great places to go in your local area but will also make it easy for you to find your way around thanks to their handy maps!

Choose one of the suggested walks below and get active today! Ranging from 1.7 miles to 2.3 miles, these short walks are fun, easy to follow and can be done close to home!

Billingham: Sandy Lane Walk

Starting and finishing at Billingham Forum, this 2.1 mile walk takes you on a loop around Billingham centre from The Causeway to Marton Drive and through Billingham Golf Course.

Starting at Eaglescliffe Medical Centre, this 2.1 mile walk takes you onto a stretch of the Teesdale Way before looping back through Eaglescliffe.

Starting at Norton Medical Centre, this 2.1 mile walk takes you down Albany Road and to a path that comes out near Holme House Prison before looping back down a path that runs alongside the A19.

Stockton: Two Bridge Circular

Starting at the Municipal Buildings, this 2.1 mile walk takes you through the town centre to the River Tees and down University Boulevard before heading back to the River Tees and on to a portion of the Teesdale Way.

Starting at Thornaby Medical Centre, this 1.7 mile walk takes you down Trenchard Avenue and Lockerbie Walk before looping back down Thornaby Road and Master Road.
