Diving Into A Good Book
An exciting and innovative scheme is making a splash in Tees Active’s venues and Stockton-on-Tees borough’s libraries. Tees Million has funded Tees Active’s Swimming in Books concept which is designed to inspire reading and improve literacy and numeracy at the earliest age to provide children with the best start in life.
Children aged under five enrolled on Tees Active’s Learn to Swim programme will be given extra encouragement to connect their love of water with a love of words by picking up a free copy of Splash written by Paralympics GB Gold Medallist Claire Cashmore when they join one of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s local libraries.
As well as the incentive of a free book we have teamed up with the Council’s Library service to offer preschool children themed rhyme time sessions, a series of special story and themed play sessions over the next 12 months which will culminate in an action-packed Swimming in Books Festival.
Leon Jones, Managing Director of Tees Active said, “Encouraging young children to gain a passion for reading and improving their literacy skills is vital for their development, so I am delighted that Tees Active has developed this innovative project with our partners.” We are thankful for the vision of Tees Million to bring the project to life as it demonstrates that physical activity can be a vehicle to drive and motivate individuals at every stage of their life.
Jonelle Bain, Donor Support Manager for Tees Foundation said “Tees Million is delighted to help to inspire young children to begin a love of reading and books. The Swimming in Books project has innovatively combined the physical activity of swimming with literacy, which is so important in helping people in all aspects of their future lives.”
