If you live in Stockton-on-Tees and would like support maintaining a healthy weight, health professionals can refer patients to Tees Active’s weight management programme. Where physical activity will be beneficial, this 12-week programme unlocks unlimited access to Tees Active’s 4 gyms, 4 swimming pools and a variety of fitness classes, embedding physical activity into daily routines and creating healthy habits that will impact long term health. With locations in Billingham Forum, IB Leisure (Ingleby Barwick), Stockton Splash and Thornaby Pavilion, patients can access convenient locations with qualified and friendly staff to offer support and guidance throughout their journey.
Note: if a participant does not wish to provide weight / waist measurements, but a healthcare professional assesses them as experiencing overweight or obesity and that the weight management service would be beneficial for them, they will still be able to access the service via referral from a healthcare professional.
Aged sixteen years or over. * Safeguarding and service provision processes must be in place for 16/17 year olds. There is no upper age limit, however appropriate support should be given to older adults, taking into consideration the risk of muscle mass loss, and older service users will be encouraged to liaise with their GP.
(23+ for people of Black African, African-Caribbean and Asian origin)
Resident, or registered with a GP practice, in the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees
The 12 week programme costs £42. This is to be paid upfront in the venue when you attend. The cost is heavily subsidised by Tees Active and is equivalent to £3.50 per week for full access to Tees Active’s full fitness provision.
The 12-week pass includes access to all Tees Active gyms, swimming pools and fitness classes at Billingham Forum, IB Leisure, Thornaby Pavilion and Pool and Stockton Splash. You will also be given a password to access the online resource page, which includes a link to the Facebook support group – a user-led network to provide support and encouragement, as well as sharing ideas, recipes and progress.
Once you have been referred by a health practitioner, a member of the Tees Active team will call you to arrange an induction at your preferred venue. At this appointment we will help you to familiarise yourself with the venue and the services available to you. We will ask you to download our app so we can carry out a body assessment and discuss your personal goals. The body assessment gives you accurate body measurements that go far beyond weight and body fat. Results include: body mass index, muscle mass, bone mass, visceral fat, basal metabolic rate (how many calories your body needs) and metabolic age (the age your body thinks you are). This will help us to provide guidance and support throughout your journey.
All Tees Active venues have dedicated and knowledgeable teams who you can speak with you whenever you visit. Our team can assist you with exercises and advise on proper form and technique so that you achieve the best results possible.
We will reach out to you towards the end of the pass – we we will ask you to provide an updated body assessment in the gym, just like in your first visit. This will help us to understand how beneficial the pass has been and to tailor advice on how you can sustain physical activity beyond the programme. Participants providing an up to date body assessment will also be offered a joining incentive to continue using Tees Active’s fitness facilities.
This programme is only available via referral from a GP or qualified healthcare practitioners. If you meet the criteria please request a referral via your GP practice.
This is a subsidised scheme that requires set up and administration, and is therefore non-refundable. We suggest only those who plan to attend for the duration of the programme to seek referral. If you have a change in circumstances before or during the programme, please email [email protected].
