Wilkinson puts his rivals to the Sword

14 year old Chris Wilkinson from Guisborough was crowned National Schools Biathlon Champion in Norwich at the weekend after seeing off stiff opposition and finishing first at the National Schools Biathlon Championships for Year 10 Boys .

Chris who is a pupil at Sacred Heart R. C school in Redcar and a member of Billingham Amateur Swimming Club amassed a winning total of 2444 points. Chris came first in the 100m swim with a time of 57.87 seconds and finished fourth in the 1000m run with a time of 2 mins and 53 secs, this enabled Chris to beat his nearest rival by 33 points

Chris’s triumph was made even more remarkable as he has battled with injury and illness throughout 2005. Chris’s catalogue of obstacles include a coccyx injury, fractured right hand, viral infection, fractured left hand!!!! and a viral infection that severely affected his training for the first two weeks of February 2006.

Billingham Amateur Swimming Club coach Guy Fawkes said " Chris is an intelligent lad and is a great swimmer to coach as he always gives me constructive feedback after every session. After all his injuries and illnesses he has endured over the last 12 months this is an outstanding achievement"

Modest Chris said "I am happy with my win and want to stay injury free so I can concentrate on training hard for the swimming nationals later this year"

To top Chris’s week off he will be inducted into the Tees Active Sports Academy when it is launched on Tuesday 7th March at Billingham Forum
