Update: Jemma Lowe wins BBC Wales Carwyn James Young Sports Personality of the Year Award!

 

A Teesside swimming star has been nominated for the prestigious BBC Wales Carwyn James Young Sports Personality of the Year Award. Hartlepool born Jemma Lowe a member of the Borough of Stockton Swimming Scheme and Tees Active Sports Academy represented Wales at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Great Britain at the Junior European Championships and World Youth Championships.

17 year old Jemma qualifies to represent Wales as her father Mike is Welsh. Proud father Mike said” This is fantastic news and Jemma’s nomination is a tremendous honour .The family are really looking forward to the ceremony at the Celtic Manor but Jemma realises there is a tremendous amount of hard training before the Olympic trials in March.”

Jemma has had a fantastic 2007 and in August at the National Championships in Sheffield she set a new British senior record for the 100m Butterfly of 58.73 seconds .This talented teenager is also the Welsh record holder for the 50m, 100m and 200m Butterfly.

Jemma and her family will be attending the BBC Wales Sports Personality ceremony on December 2nd which will be held at the exclusive Celtic Manor Hotel venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup.

A film team from BBC Wales travelled to Stockton this week to interview and film Jemma training at the Splash. The awards ceremony will also be broadcast live on BBC 2 Wales and digital satellite.

Jemma is currently recovering from injury at the moment but will be back training hard for The Olympic trials in March where she hopes to be selected for the Beijing Olympics and Jemma will be competing for the British Team in Manchester at the World Short Course Championships.
