13 St Michael’s pupils took to the water in a day of learning outside of the classroom at Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre .The aim of the activity was to develop team building skills and motivate learning as a group in preparation for a GSCE exam in May. Pupils took part in a range of team building activities on the River Tees that tested their interpersonal, communication and leaderships skills. All of these skills are needed to develop the confidence and self esteem of effective learners. The morning’s activities were followed with a revision session preparing students for the demands of a module GSCE RE paper.

Sara Crawshaw Head of RE at St Michael’s said that the day was “highly successful, pupils were well motivated and engaged throughout the day. They enjoyed learning outside of the classroom and have asked to do more activities that bring them new and exciting opportunities. It has been a fantastic way to make the RE curriculum fun and accessible, encouraging tolerance, understanding, cooperation and collaboration. We hope to do more activities like this to make RE even more relevant to all pupils”. Emily Wray one of the pupils attending said “Today has shown me how important it is to be determined and to try your best”

All of the students were excited and exhilarated after the day, many said that they had really enjoyed challenging themselves and that they were more confident and willingly to try new experiences. Steven Bartliff said “it has been a great experience, the team building sessions have made me realise the importance of working with others and how to use my skills most effectively” Luke Smith was keen to get involved in other water sports at Castlegate Quays that would develop his new skills and satisfy his interest in water sports “I had a great time throughout the day. It has made me want to do more water sports and be more active”.
