Wat-er lot of Fun!

Schoolchildren took up their paddles to compete for trophies in the annual Primary and Secondary Schools Regatta. In its second year running the children were putting their rowing skills to the test whilst having fun on the water.

Forget the famous Oxford Vs Cambridge boat race, the competition was set at Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre to find the crews who would rule the waves on the River Tees.

The regatta took place on the 4th July and was divided into two sections, with the primary schools competing in the morning session and secondary schools competing in the afternoon session. Each team raced in a knockout competition battling their way down the 250-metre course. Each bell-boat had a crew of eight paddlers and was guided by a qualified member of staff from the watersports centre.

The primary school competition was keenly contested with 12 teams taking part. The teams had to negotiate the heat stages to get through to the grand final. In the exciting final Cundall Manor School of Thirsk just held off Yarm School to be crowned winners of the Primary schools bell boating regatta and lift the magnificent trophy.

The secondary school competition was contested on a smaller scale and therefore included fun ‘backwards rowing’ races and even resulted in the teacher’s taking part. This involved a lot of soaking as the children wanted to make sure their teacher’s got wet on the water! In another close race Cundall Manor just edged out their rivals St. Michaels School to be crowned champions.

Simon White, Manager of Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre said, “ The Regatta has been a great success and hopefully next year’s event will be even bigger and better”

As well as bringing enjoyment to the children there are many benefits to being involved in rowing, including improved health and fitness as well as the great feeling of being part of a team, achieving goals and enjoying the company of others.
