Team Building Trial on the Tees

Members of Tees Active Sports Academy were joined by the adventure loving gazette reporter Angela Rainey on a team building exercise at Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre.

Academy Manager, Allan McDermott had divided the athletes into 2 teams. One was a Wet Sports team consisting mainly of swimmers and the other team was a dry sports team which consisted of athletes who competed on dry land or Ice.

The teams were given two tasks which were designed to improve leadership, team building and communication skills. The first task involved each team appointing a leader who could only communicate with his or hers blindfolded team mates whilst they paddled around a set course on the River Tees.

Is everybody ready?

The Second task involved the teams constructing a raft which was utilised to bring ‘toxic waste (water from a boat located in the middle of the River Tees) back to a vessel on the shoreline. Although the Castlegate Quay instructors had arranged a few surprises which tested each teams ability to adapt to different situations.

We are going to crash but nobody can see

Simon White, Castlegate Quay Watersports Manager said "This type of event is ideal for sports clubs and business teams to help develop teambuilding leadership and communication skills as well as being great fun. The athletes from the Academy have done really well today in quite difficult weather conditions.”

On the road to victory

Academy Manager, Allan McDermott added “Today has allowed the academy athletes to enter a different environment and enjoy a fun event which has allowed them to relax away from their pressurised sporting programmes. Although there was a competitive edge between the two teams, with the dry sports team pipping the swimmers to victory over the 2 exercises. The swimmers are now seeking revenge and want me to organise a similar event but on dry land.”
