Sporting Bonanza for St Michaels

Pupils from St Michaels RC secondary school in Billingham have definitely had a sporty start to their academic year. As part of Stockton on Tees Teaching PCT childhood obesity prevention strategy 10,000 free leisure saver cards have been made available to 3-16 year olds within Stockton.

 Tees Active, added the incentive of a £250 prize to be used for sports equipment or services to the primary school and the secondary school with the greatest number of pupils who took advantage of applying for their free leisure saver card, which gives holders discount prices to their local active life centre.

Priors Mill Primary School won their category and received £250 worth of sports equipment.St Michaels with their prize decided to use Tees Active coaches to deliver a combination of gymnastics, street dance, boxercise and spinning classes at the school to the benefit of their pupils.

St Michaels also made full use of Stockton on Tees Teaching PCT Sporting Start initiative which made 6 weeks of Watersports instruction available to every secondary school in Stockton.

12 pupils from St Michaels managed to gain their British Canoe 1 Star Award at Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre

Tony Hall, PE teacher at St Michaels said “These initiatives have been a real bonus for our pupils. They have been able to sample several activities that are not normally made available. They are thoroughly enjoying the sessions and with the help of Tees Active we are signposting them to Active Life Centres where they can continue to experience these activities.”
