Spinning their Way to Sporting Success
Tees Active Sports Academy members were given an early taste of spinning, the newest addition to Billingham Forums Health and Fitness programme. Newly qualified spinning instructor Lyndsey Davis put Lorraine Smith, Emily Crosbie, Ashleigh Forster, Andrew Winspear, Mattie Allison and Chris Leighton through their paces.
The Forum has purchased 15 Star Track spinning bikes at a cost of £10k. This new activity will assist the Academy athletes in improving their cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance working muscles such as the quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, hips and abdominals.
Allan McDermott Tees Active Sports Academy Manager said “the purchase of the spinning bikes has come at an opportune time as many of the Academy members are coming to the end of their sporting season. Therefore an activity such as spinning is a new and different way to maintain and build their cardiovascular fitness during the close season”
Lorraine Smith, a sixteen year old county badminton player and member of the Academy said, “It’s been great to have a new activity such as spinning to add to the different ways to maintain and improve my fitness and I look forward in taking part in some of the classes throughout the summer months”
Spinning will be introduced in June at Billingham with 6 sessions a week planned for members of the public to get to grips with this new fitness activity.
Beccie Bennett Tees Actives Health and Fitness Manager said “Spinning is an ideal activity for people of all ages and fitness levels. Individuals can control how hard they work by adjusting the resistance levels on their bike. This form of exercise is excellent as it it puts minimal stress on the joints of the lower body”
