Simply the Best


One of swimming’s brightest coaching prospects has been selected for a UK Sport initiative designed to fast track development in time to secure success at the 2012 Olympics.Graeme Antwhistle

Graeme Antwhistle, Head Coach of the Borough of Stockton Swim Scheme is part of the 2006 intake of UK Sports innovative Elite Coach programme, which aims to accelerate the development of the nation’s most exciting coaching prospects. Graeme is part of the top 10 coaches in the country who have been selected from sports such as netball, sailing, athletics and hockey.

Being part of Elite Coach promises a challenging three year programme on a fast track to coaching excellence. The scheme will see tailor made programmes developed for each of this years ten elite coaches, which will not only allow them to develop their technical skills by working and observing the best in action, but also to develop their leadership skills which are a hallmark of the best operators in high performance environments.

Graeme has just returned from the World Swimming Coaches Convention, which was held in the USA, where he was able to observe Jack Bauerle, the head coach of the US Women’s Swim Team work at his base at the University of Georgia in Atlanta.

Graeme who has been Head Coach of the Borough of Stockton Swim Scheme since 1998 said “I am delighted to have been selected for such a prestigious position and I will be able to apply some of the principles that I will learn from other sports and disciplines to my coaching,

Graeme added,” My ambition is to get as many of my swimmers into national squads and winning medals at major international championships.”

With Graeme’s expertise and the young swimming talent currently in the area, maybe we will see a Teessider on the podium at future Olympic games.
