Purr-fect start for Wildcats

Whilst their male ice hockey counterparts Billingham Bombers grab the limelight. Billingham Forum Ice Arena is also the home of the female ice hockey team, the Billingham Wildcats.

The Wildcats have started the season in a rich vein of form, winning their first five games scoring 56 goals whilst only conceding 14. The girls now stand proudly at the top of League Division One North and will be pushing hard to maintain their top spot till the end of the season.

The wildcats were formed 10 years ago and the current squad consist of 18 girls whose ages range from12 to 28 and live as far a field as Durham.

The Wildcats are training hard for their next away game on the 9th December as they travel to North Wales as they tackle Flintshire Furies.

Wildcats coach Julie Hammond said, “We have started the season really strongly and obviously the girls confidence is high although we know we cannot afford to ease up as we are determined to bring the title back to Billingham.”

Julie added, “If we can capture the top spot in our division we will play the winners of the Southern division at the playoff finals in Coventry. The winners of that game will play the bottom club from the Premier League in a game that will result in Premiership status for the victor”

The Wildcats next home game is at Billingham Forum Ice Arena on 7th January, face off 6.15pm.

If you are interested in taking up Ice Hockey, the Forum have Stick and Glove sessions on Sundays 4.15pm – 5.30pm where you can hire gloves, hockey sticks and helmets.
