Kids Participate in 2008

2008 has been a great year for sport, particularly with the success of Team GB at the Beijing Olympics. Stockton school children have had a fantastic year of sport thanks to Stockton on Tees TPCT who have worked with Tees Active to organise a massive programme of free sports and physical activities for children during the school holidays.
The Sporting Start programme is part of Stockton on Tees TPCT prevention strategy to tackle childhood obesity and has resulted in 8655 attendances in over 22 different activities that varied from kayaking to street dance.
Elizabeth Shassere, Director of Public Health for Stockton on Tees TPCT said “Sporting Start provides fun, safe opportunities for children to get physically active. Getting active at an early age promotes healthy habits that can last a lifetime and could help prevent a range of health problems in later life, as well has help children maintain a healthy weight. Sporting Start is just one of many initiatives that Stockton-on-Tees Teaching PCT supports to provide healthy lifestyle opportunities for children and adults in our community. "
Karen Cook from Billingham whose 2 children attended the learn to swim and gymnastics classes said “This is a great way to introduce children to sport and my children have benefited immensely. A big thank you to everybody involved in Sporting Start, I hope it continues in 2009”
The good news is that the Sporting Start programme will be returning for the February half term school holidays in 2009.Paul Bambrough Young Persons Active Health Manager is busy organising February’s programme which will have 0ver 20 different activities that include free inductions for the Activ8 gyms for children 12 and above.
