Kids Keep Cool

The children of the borough of Stockton are definitely keeping cool and active this summer as record numbers of children have signed up to Sporting Start the largest free children’s school holiday programme in the United Kingdom.

Funded by NHS Stockton the scheme designed to keep children active through the holidays, whilst being signposted to courses and clubs where they can continue their activities in September and beyond.

The return of Billingham Forum has meant that 300 children have enrolled on a week long learn to skate course and 300 children have had the opportunity to learn how to swim.

Cheryl Bythway, Young Persons Active Health Manager said “This has definitely been our most popular programme. Having the Forum back on line has meant we have our most diverse programme to date. Watching the children on the ice and in the pool is a real pleasure and their confidence and ability levels have risen over the week. I am sure they will be back to skate and swim after the holidays are over,”

Parent Kimberley Turnbull said “My daughter Kaitlyn has really enjoyed her pre –school gymnastics and mini soccer sessions. I think its fantastic that parents have the ability to enrol their children on taster sessions and help develop an active lifestyle at such a young age.”
