Jemma Lowe
Birthday girl Jemma Lowe celebrated her seventeenth birthday at the British Swimming Championships in Manchester in winning style. The Borough of Stockton Swimming Scheme and Tees Active Sports Academy star became British Champion at the 100m and 200m Butterfly.

Jemma competed for Wales at the Commonwealth Games last year gift-wrapped her week by setting a new Welsh record of 27.75 seconds in the 50m Butterfly heats and she went on to pick up a bronze medal in the final. The 100m where she dipped below the one-minute mark for the first time in an impressive time of 59.78 seconds and she topped her week off by setting a third Welsh record of 2.10.94 in the 200m.

“I am really pleased” beamed Jemma “I’ve been waiting ages to go below a minute in the 100m”. Jemma was delighted to lower her 200m best but would have liked her title-winning race to be faster “I am happy to take gold but I was a little disappointed with my time in the final. I’ve set new personal best times in all the butterfly events so it has been good”

“It is strange because normally I have someone to follow such as Terri Dunning, but I was the one leading this time so it was a good experience,” said this talented teenager who added, “I’ve now got to focus on getting my qualifying times for Beijing next year”
