Golden Girl in Paddling Success
Tees’s kayaking star Lucy Gardener returned back to Teesside this week with 4 gold medals and 2 silver medals after competing at the National Paddleability Championships held at the National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepoint near Nottingham.
Lucy, a member of the Tees Active Sports Academy trains at Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre won Gold in the 200m and 500m individual events and the paired up with Robin Webb to take gold in the 200m and 500m pairs events.
Lucy has had quite a summer has she has just recently from the World Canoe Sprint Championships which were held in Poznan, Poland. Lucy finished fourth in a personal best time of 1.08.64 in the 200m.
.A delighted Lucy said “Results and performances over the summer have gone really well and my team of coaches who include my father Eddie, Wendy Morris one of the Watersports instructors at Castlegate Quay and former Olympic paddler and Great Britain Under 21 coach Trevor Weatherall have been fantastic in working with me during the many hours I have spent on the water.”
Lucy added “ I would like to thank Natalie Smith from Stockton Sports Development Team for all her support.”
Lucy is now back home paddling on the Tees as she targets the National Championships next April, which hopefully lead to selection for the European Championships to be held in Spain and the World Championships to be held in Hungary as she continues to fly the flag for Teesside
