Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Following the success of the England Womens Football team in the World Cup last summer, Tees Active staged a Girls FA Cup football competition at Thornaby Pavilion. North Tees PCT, are working in partnership with Tees Active to increase physical activity within Stockton on Tees, sponsored this exciting event.

11 teams from schools in Stockton, Thornaby and Billingham had to negotiate their way through the group stages before negotiating the tense and nail biting knockout phase. The final was between Everton (Bader Primary) and Middlesbrough (St Patricks) so bragging rights in Thornaby were at stake.
In a sporting and close encounter Everton took an early lead through their captain Elena Purcifer, but Boro fought back to equalise when the ball just crossed the line, so much so that the referee only awarded the goal after consulting with his assistants. Everton immediately stormed back and a spectacular long range shot from Elena Purcifer sealed the victory in the dying minutes.
The biggest cheer of the day was when Sandra Brown from North Tees PCT presented the trophy to the girls from Bader Primary School.

Paul Bambrough, Tees Active Young Persons Lifestyle Manager said “The event has been a fantastic success and the girls competing have created a fantastic atmosphere and the games have been played in a great spirit. I would like to thank North Tees PCT whose support has made this event possible. We hope to make this an annual event.
