Girls Are World Class

Thornaby Pavilion was once again the venue for another successful sporting event as over 150 girls competed in the Stockton Schools Girls World Cup organised by Tees Active.
20 teams consisting of Year 5 and Year 6 girls aged between 9 and 11 represented countries that will be competing at this year World Cup in South Africa.
The teams were divided into 2 groups with the top 4 teams from each group qualifying for the Knock out phase of the competition.
After some tense and well contested games Cameroon (Bader Primary) and England (St Paul’s RC) made there way through to the final. The final was officiated by Joe Ure who was part of a contingent of St Michaels BTEC leisure students that had helped to organise and officiate the tournament.
In a tense final St Paul’s took the lead as player of the tournament Sarah Cramer smashed in a stunning goal. But Bader coached by Ian ‘the special one’ Bruce pressurised the St Paul’s goal and eventually forced an equaliser. With only seconds left on the clock Sarah Cramer once again unleashed a fearsome shot which produced the save of the day from the Bader keeper, resulting in the dreaded penalty shoot out.
Once again the curse of England teams in penalty shoots struck and Cameroon (Bader) were victorious. David Seller, Manager of Thornaby Pavilion said” The sportsmanship and enthusiasm of the teams competing today has been top class and all the girls have been a credit to their schools and teachers. Our recent refurbishment has made the Pavilion a perfect venue for staging sporting and community events.”
