Get To Grips With The Family!

STOCKTON SPORTS CENTRE is nurturing a sporting dynasty for one North East family, in the field of Olympic Wrestling.
The Billingham-based Sudron family are prominent members of the wrestling fraternity with three generations of wrestling talent from the same household.
Eldest family member Dave Sudron is a wrestling coach and referee and his son Michael is an ex-British champion. Michael’s son Marcus Sudron’s recent tournament performances indicate that the family tradition is set to continue.
Now aged fifty-one years old, Dave began wrestling in his early twenties and spent more than a decade competing internationally before calling it a day.
Dave coaches Olympic Wrestling at Stockton Sports Centre twice a week, is Chairman of the Northern Region Wrestling Association and is also an internationally recognised referee, judging prominent wrestling events around the world.
Most recently, Dave refereed bouts in the Albanian European Junior Championship and domestic competitions in Wrexham and London.
His son Michael Sudron, aged thirty-two, was once British Champion and ranked 6th in the world at the U.S.A. World Championships aged only sixteen years old.
Grandson Marcus, aged eleven, recently came runner up in the British Under-14’s Championships at Crystal Palace, being nudged out of top spot by only three points.
This followed silver positions in both the Under-14’s English Championships held at Stockton Sports Centre earlier this year, and the Under-14’s Welsh International Open in Wrexham.
Dave pointed out: “Considering Marcus has moved up an age group this year, he’s doing fantastically well.
“We all hope he can continue to fulfil his potential and go on to win a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London, but in the meantime I’m just pleased he’s enjoying the family tradition!”
