Duo Prepare for Endurance Challenge

Two intrepid kayakers are preparing for one of most challenging races in the kayaking calendar, Chris Walker and Alasdair Wood are taking on the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon. This 125 mile race is an annual event that attracts kayakers from all over the country and abroad. The kayakers have to negotiate 77 portages along with the effect of tidal changes on the River Thames not to mention the pure stamina needed to complete the race which will take approximately 20 hours to complete.
Chris, a Watersports instructor at Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre and Alasdair who works at the Institute of Human Genetics at the Centre of Life are also taking the opportunity to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign in the North East.
Chris’s employees Tees Active are supporting the two former Yarm School pupils by providing the pair with expert advice from Keiran Neylan one of the Fitness Advisors at the newly refurbished Activ8 gym at Splash. Keiran said “I have designed a programme that will improve Chris and Alasdair’s muscular endurance. I will also been designing some cardio vascular workouts which will go a long way to improving their endurance through the winter months. Their programme will be reviewed every 4 weeks so the guys can progress right up to race day in April”
Chris and Alasdair have also been attending Tees Active Sports Academy weekly core stability session where Rachel Paylor has been putting them through their paces.
Chris said” The access to the advice and facilities provided by Tees Active will be a great help through the winter months. Alasdair and myself are hoping to raise as much as £3000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign North East.”
