Double Silver in Steel City

Sprinter Rachel Highfield had her first meet of the indoor athletics season at the Northern Indoor Athletics Championships held at the |English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. 15 year old Rachel is a member of Gateshead AC and Tees Active Sports Academy and lives in Thornaby’s has been training hard throughout the autumn under the guidance of her coach Bruce Horsburgh but unfortunately her training was hampered by a chest infection just before Christmas

Rachel a pupil at St Patricks RC School was lacking race practice but still came away with a silver in the Under 17 60m with a time of 8.04 with Kristie Edwards from the City of Sheffield AC taking the gold and a silver in the 200m with a time of 26.02 and Kristie Edwards pipping her again for the gold.

Although she returned to Teesside with 2 silver medals Rachel was disappointed and said “Initially I was gutted with my runs in Sheffield but on refection my illness just before Christmas and a lack of racing, this was my first run of the indoor season definitely put my times in perspective. After reviewing the video of the races with my coach we will be rectifying some of the technical faults over the next few months. But this has made me more determined and focused for my training sessions over the next few months as I prepare for the outdoor season.”
