Double Delight for Sprint Duo

Two Teesside sprinters have definitely started their outdoor season in golden style as they blasted out of their blocks to take gold in the 100m and 200m at the Ann Marie Readshaw Memorial Open at Shildon last Sunday.

Billingham sprinter Christian Carson who is coached by Charles Stuart is a member of Gateshead Harriers and Tees Active Sports Academy, posted a personal best of 10.90 seconds in the 100m and 22.20 seconds in the 200m as he collected gold in both events in the men’s under 20 category.

Talented teenager Rachel Highfield from Thornaby is also a member of Gateshead Harriers and Tees Active Sports Academy recorded a personal best time of 25.3 seconds in the 200m and equalled her personal best of 12.4 seconds in the 100m as she sped home to collect double gold in her first meet of the season.

15 year old Rachel a pupil at St Patricks RC School and who is coached by Bruce Horsburgh said “I have been working hard through the off season at Gateshead and Thornaby Pavilion so it’s great to have run well at Shildon, Richard Kilty was helping both Christian and myself warm up which was a real bonus. I am hoping to improve on my personal bests through the course of the season but there is a lot of work to keep me developing as an athlete.”

Christian added “I am delighted to of broken the 11 second barrier and hope to get faster throughout the season.”
