Chris looks for the Riviera Touch
A young athlete from Billingham Swimming Club will be heading off to the millionaires playground of Monaco this weekend as he competes for Great Britain in the World Biathle Championships. Chris Wilkinson from Guisborough who is also a member of Tees Active Sports Academy is part of a 5 strong British team that will be competing in the youth category B section of the competition which is for 15 and 16 year old boys.
Chris qualified for the World Championships by finishing second at the National Biathle Championships in August which were staged in the slightly less glamorous setting of Salford Quays. This followed Chris victory at the National Schools Biathlon Championship in February at Bath University.
The Biathle consists of a 1000m run followed by a 200m swim then the athletes are straight back into their running shows to complete a final 1000m run.
This talented sixteen year old said “I am really looking forward to the Championships; my training has been going well although I know I will face tough competition from the South Africans and the Italians. The Biathle is really popular in these two countries and they will be the guys to beat this year.”
Chris added “I am sure Monaco will be a superb setting for the event and I am positive the water will be a little bit cleaner than Salford Quays where the water had the distinct taste of oil when I accidentally got a mouthful during the National Championships.“
This talented and modest teenager may not break the bank in Monte Carlo but let’s hope he breaks the heart of his competitors at the World Championships.
