British Triumph for Billingham Boy
Teesside has produced yet another junior British Champion. This time in the sport of Olympic wrestling. Billingham schoolboy Marcus Sudron has come home with the Under 14 crown.
Marcus a pupil at Billingham Campus School and a member of the Tees Active Sports Academy competed at the British Championships held at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. Marcus, who fights in the 44kg category, pitted his skills against wrestlers from all over Britain.
Over 160 wrestlers competed at the championships and Marcus met his great rival Tom McKenna from the Dunfermline Club. Their previous head-to-head bouts have always been close affairs with Tom McKenna having the edge having won twice and lost once against Marcus.
The final was a tense bout, but within ten seconds of the second round, Marcus countered an attack by Tom with a double leg defence and under hook allowing Marcus to pin his opponent in a decisive winning move.
Marcus whose training base is Stockton Sports Centre was not the only member of the club to return with honours as brother and sister Thomas and Lydia Denham returned with Gold and Silver. Thomas in the 69kg under 14’s class and Lydia in the 38kg under 11’s class.
Marcus’s father and coach Mick Hewitson said, “I am delighted with the results over the weekend the success of Thomas, Lydia and Marcus over the weekend proves that the club has strength in depth and is going in the right direction. Marcus is looking forward to the Welsh Opens in 2 weeks time where he will renew is battle with Tom McKenna.
