Thornaby Indoor Bowls Club member Ben Suggitt is celebrating a first call-up to the England Under 25’s bowling team.
18-year-old Ben was selected after making a strong impression on the England Selectors at Gedling Indoor Bowling Club on 22nd November.
Ben’s first match for the Under 25 Men’s International Team will be on Saturday 9th- Sunday 10th January at Provincial Towns Indoor Bowling Club, Belfast. This is part of the British Isles Indoor Bowls Council (B.I.I.B.C) International Indoor Series, where Ben will face stiff competition against the rival nations of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

I am proud to represent England and raise the profile of Thornaby Indoor Bowls Club. I am keen to introduce new bowlers to the club in order to keep this success going year after year. Bowls is a great sport for people of all ages young and old.”
Acklam resident Ben was spotted by the England selectors whilst playing in national competitions at both club level and county level. The England selectors mark every bowl and points are awarded on the strength of the shot. Ben’s role for the International Team is leading for England, which means he will bowl the jack and the first two shots of the game.
Ben has been coached under the watchful eye of Brian Hannaford, main coach at Thornaby Indoor Bowls club, ever since he began playing bowls. Brian who has coached other bowls players to international level is keen to recruit juniors to the sport and even provides equipment for those just starting out.

We all knew he was a real talent in the Sport and the England call up confirms Ben’s ability in the game. All Ben’s hard work and dedication has paid off and I’m sure he will become a permanent fixture on the international scene.”
The junior section of the bowls club meets every Thursday at 4.30pm till 6.30pm and Saturday 9.00am till 10.00am. Anyone aged between 7 and 18 years of age can play in the well-established junior section. These sessions offer juniors the chance to play competitive bowls and learn the correct techniques and principles of playing. The juniors also play in a number of leagues and competitions such as the Yorkshire County under 18’s and Under 18’s County Singles.
