Baywatch comes to Billingham

Billingham Forum played host to the Billingham Lifesaving Classic last weekend as teams from Blyth, Rawmarsh, Heanor, Edlington, Sheffield and Billingham were put to the test in a variety of challenging events.
The Classic has become a regular fixture over the past 23 years in the Forums calendar. The event involves Rookies (under 12’s) Juniors (Under 16’s) and a Seniors section.
The Classic is a team event that involves teams participating in a staged incident where the teamwork, communication skills and ability to perform under pressure is tested. The second half of the event involves a series of speed relay events such as towing, rope, obstacle and the pyjama and fin relay.
With over 170 competitors and over 250 enthusiastic spectators the event was a huge success with the Rookies section being won by Heanor, Blyth were winners in the Junior section closely followed by Billingham and home team advantage paid off in the Senior section as Billingham triumphed.
Billingham Lifesaving Club coach and organiser Heather Leighton said, “The event has been a great success due to the hard work of club members and parents. The Classic is keenly contested but all the competitors thoroughly enjoyed the day.” Heather added “If people are interesting in learning lifesaving skills such as resuscitation, basic first aid skills, rescue and towing techniques the Billingham Forum Lifesaving Club run sessions for rookies on Mondays between 5 and 6pm and the junior and senior section train on Wednesdays between 8.15-9.45pm. The only requirement is that you must be able to swim 100m.”
