Powerboats are fun and exhilirating. Speeding across the River Tees is sure to give you a buzz. Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre provides powerboat training and courses for the beginner to the more advanced. Our courses are both enjoyable days out and informative.
What courses are held at Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre
All Powerboat training and courses held at the centre are Royal Yachting Association (R.Y.A.) Approved.
Available courses are
R.Y.A. Level 1
R.Y.A. Level 2 Inland
R.Y.A. Level 2 Coastal
R.Y.A. Safety boat
R.Y.A. Intermediate
R.Y.A. Advanced
The RYA Level 2 Coastal is the pre-requisite for the International Certificate of Competence for driving vessels abroad.
Do I need any experience for the courses?
No, not for R.Y.A. Level 1 & R.Y.A. Level 2 Inland.
Would I need to bring anything with me?
You will need to bring a packed lunch and clothes appropriate to the weather conditions.
The centre does have a supply of waterproofs but if you have your own we recommend you bring them with you. All other equipment is provided
Will I get wet?
Yes if it rains, but there is no point on the course where planned immersion takes place.
What sort of boats would I be driving?
The centre has 4 Newmatics with tiller steered 9.8 Tohatsu outboards.
2 XS RIB with Mercury Outboards.
1 XS RIB with Mercury 60 Outboard
You will drive different boats depending on the course that you enrol onto.

R.Y.A. Level 1 Introduction to Powerboating - A practical introduction to boat handling and safety.
R.Y.A. Level 2 National Powerboat Certificate - Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent Powerboat pilot and is the basis of the International Cerificate of Competence.
R.Y.A. Safety Boat 2-day Course - Provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes for racing or training activities.
