What is Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre?
Probably the largest, best equipped sailing and paddling centre in the North East.
What does Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre do?
We teach beginners how to paddle kayaks/canoes or how to sail small sailboats and we do it in a way that is enjoyable! We can also cater for the more experienced users through the clubs at the centre.
Who can come to Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre?
Anyone 8 years upwards. We run weekend and holiday courses for individuals and weekday sessions of 2 hours for Primary, Secondary, Special Needs Schools and Youth Groups.
Do I need to be a good swimmer to come to the Centre?
No – But you do have to be happy and confident in water.
Will I need to buy expensive equipment?
No – Everything – Boats, protective clothing, buoyancy aids, helmets are supplied.
Will I get wet?
Yes to start with! – So you have to bring a complete change of clothing and trainers and a 50p piece for a secure locker.
Can I join a club straight away?
No - you will need to undertake one of our introductory courses first to ensure that you have all the relevant information and some of the basics to fully enjoy the clubs.
How do I learn?
All our coaches have National Coaching Qualifications in sailing and/or kayaking so it will be professional and fun. If you come with a school/youth/adult group you will progress week by week. If you come as an individual you will get a 1 day introductory course, after which juniors can join the Saturday Club and adults any of the clubs offered.
Can I gain qualifications?
Yes! We are a training centre inspected annually by the Royal Yachting Association and the British Canoe Union Award to issue R.Y.A. and BCU certificates.
What can I do when I’ve learned?
Learn some more! Stay with us as a member or join a local Sailing or Canoe Club.
Watersports, especially sailing wins more Olympic medals for Team G.B. than any other sport – So become a champion. Members race on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

What does it cost to join the Centre?
We run Saturday Club, Wednesday evening Sailing Club, Thursday evening Kayak Club and events away from the centre.
Membership rates are :–
Adult - £63.00 per year and £7.50 per coached session
Child - £42.00 per year and £6.50 per coached session
Family - First member full rate all others £20.00 off
